England Shirts — Why the Plain White One Is the Hardest to Get Right
Country · England
Nothing to hide behind
White body, one coloured trim, and a nation that expects the shirt to work. This is the hardest national shirt to design in Europe and the one people keep longest.

The white shirt problem | The three lions, and what they are not | A tournament shirt is a different object | What to print
An England shirt is a design problem. White shows everything — a season of wearing, a wash that went wrong, a name set that is lifting at one corner. There is no pattern to distract from any of it.
The white shirt problem
Every other national shirt has somewhere to hide. This one does not.
Design a shirt in a strong colour and half your decisions are made for you. Design one in white and every seam, every panel join and every mark from a season is visible. That is why the England shirt has changed less over the decades than almost any other national design — there is very little that can be done to it.
For a buyer it means one thing: inspect the listing photos. Look at the collar, the underarm and the hem. On a white shirt, whatever is wrong will be visible there first.

The three lions, and what they are not
The crest is older than the tournament football most people associate it with, and it has never been subtle.
The three lions on the chest predate modern tournament football by centuries, and the crest has carried them continuously. It is one of the very few national badges that reads correctly at a distance without any colour at all.
That is part of why an England shirt is such a reliable gift. The badge does the identifying. You do not need to know the season or the player for it to land.

The English club shelves
Most people who buy an England shirt also own a club shirt. These are the deep ones.

A tournament shirt is a different object
In a tournament year the shirt stops being clothing and becomes something people keep in the drawer.
Outside a tournament, an England shirt is worn. In a tournament summer it is kept. People buy one, wear it for six weeks, and then it goes into a drawer and comes out again four years later — which is a completely different set of requirements from a shirt that gets worn every week.
If you are buying in a tournament year, buy early and buy the home shirt. The away design is often the more interesting one, but the home is the one that appears in the photographs.
Tournament year
Buy early, buy home. It is the one in the photographs.
Between tournaments
Buy the one you will actually wear, which is usually the away.
For a gift
Any of them. The badge does the identifying work.

What to print
The England shirt is the one where the number carries the most weight relative to the design.
Because the shirt itself is so plain, whatever goes on the back is doing all the personalising. A 9 means one thing to an England supporter and a 7 another, and both of those meanings have changed hands more than once.
If you are unsure, print a surname rather than a number, or leave it blank. A plain white England shirt with nothing on the back is a complete object and always has been.
A plain white England shirt with no printing is not an unfinished purchase. It is the finished version.

Questions people ask
Short answers, no fluff
The ones that come up most before buying on this shelf.
Is a white England shirt hard to keep clean?
It shows every mark from a season of wearing. Wash inside out and cold, and accept that it is part of owning a white shirt rather than a defect.
Which England shirt should I buy in a tournament year?
The home shirt, bought early. It is the design that ends up in the photographs people keep.
Should I print a name and number?
Optional. A plain white England shirt with an empty back is complete as it is; printing is a choice rather than a default.
Do England shirts fit true to size?
They follow English club sizing — roomier than Italian, so your usual size is normally right.
