Yamal and Spain: A 19-Year-Old’s Double Crown and the Barcelona No. 10
On September 1, 2026, Lamine Yamal walked into the Spanish Footballers’ Association (AFE) gala and walked out with two of the country’s most prestigious prizes — the 2025-26 La Liga Player of the Season and the Career Achievement award. The 19-year-old turned up in a cream jacket and black trousers, with a moustache he has been growing on purpose, and left with the clearest signal yet of where Spanish football now lives.
From the academy to the very top
Yamal joined Barcelona’s La Masia at six, was promoted to the first team at 15, and has been rewriting the record books ever since. By the end of the 2025-26 season he had reached 50 goals for the club — 31 in La Liga, 11 in the Champions League, 5 in the Copa del Rey and 3 in the Spanish Super Cup — and become the youngest player to reach that mark in any of Europe’s top five leagues since 2014-15.

The numbers behind the rise
Those trophies cover everything: three La Liga titles, two Spanish Super Cups, a Copa del Rey, a 2024 European Championship and the 2026 World Cup in North America.
The No. 10 at Barcelona
For the 2025-26 season, Barcelona handed Yamal the No. 10 shirt. The number carries Messi, Maradona, Rivaldo and a century of expectation — and Yamal extended his contract through 2031 in the same window. Wearing it has not changed the way he plays: the dribbles still come from the right, the goals still arrive in clusters, and the left foot still has that late, drifting finish.

The World Cup summer
At the 2026 World Cup, Yamal played eight matches — seven from the start — registered 51 attempted dribbles and 27 successful ones, and was named Player of the Match against Austria in the Round of 16. Spain beat France 2-0 in the semi-final, with Yamal winning the penalty that settled it, and then beat Argentina 1-0 in extra time in the final at New York/New Jersey Stadium. At 18, he had become the youngest player ever to win both a European Championship and a World Cup.
What comes next
There has been plenty of talk about a goal drought in the early weeks of 2026-27 — eight games without a goal between club and country by the start of September. Flick has been clear: “He’s a genius. He’s improving, and we need him.” Spain boss De la Fuente said the best version of Yamal “has not been seen yet.” When a 19-year-old’s “quiet” phase still features 7 shots against Athletic Bilbao, the expectations are simply different.
